W.D. Burford’s New Electric Theatre opened March 28, 1908, and the La Crosse Tribune reported it was fireproof to a finish because Mr. Burford had lined the walls of the operating room with asbestos and sheet iron. The city electrical inspector said it was safe in every respect and the fire marshal concurred.
The first Electric Theatre was advertised in the La Crosse Tribune in 1907 at Rose Street and St. Cloud Street.
Variety, the national newspaper for show business, also made notice of the New Electric Theatre opening in the April 11, 1908, edition.
Mr. Burford had signed a contract with the Western Film Company of Milwaukee, which stated the films would be new and up to date and changed four times a week. Sound was presented with a large Victor Graphaphone and electric piano.
According to La Crosse Tribune the Dairy Store moved into the former Electric Theatre in February 1909.
On April 5, 2008, the La Crosse Tribune published a list of 20 movie theatres that have operated in La Crosse over the years and the New Electric Theatre was included.
