Highland Theatre

The Highland Theatre was designed by John Eberson in Streamline Moderne style and opened on December 20, 1940 with Gloria Jean in “A Little Bit of Heaven”. It was located on Pennsylvania Avenue in the Hillcrest community of Washington. The theatre closed in 1977 and became a clothing store. Today, the building houses a child daycare center.

The Highland Theatre seated 600 people.

The HIGHLAND is dead but not demolished. Boarded up in 1977, this neighborhood was so high-crime that tearing down closed-up theatres wasn’t worth the trouble.
