Located in the west of the city centre in the Charlottenburg district at the intersection of Knesebeckstrasse and Hardenbergstraase. The Terra-Theater was opened as a cinema in 1919. It was closed in early-1922.
It remained closed and was used for storage until it reopened as a live theatre, renamed Renaissance Theater on 18th October 1922 with the play “Miss Sarah Sampson”. Designed by noted architect Oskar Kaufmann (his final design). A small outer foyer leads into a passageway foyer which extends around the rear and left-hand side of the auditorium. The upper foyer, name Bruckner Foyer is decorated as a ‘Hall of Mirrors’. Seating is provided for 396 in the orchestra level and 130-seats in the balcony and slips along the side walls. The auditorium is an amazing sight, with its walls covered in Mahogany wood which features inlaid marquetry by artist Cesar Klein. There is a splendid chandelier in the centre of the ceiling.
In 1987 the building was restored to modern-day standards, retaining the original decorative features. Productions of plays by Bertolt Brecht and small touring productions are the mainstay of the theatre.
