Showcase Cinemas Grand Rapids

National Amusements’ Showcase Cinemas Grand Rapids opened November 27, 1985. Located in Cascade Township next to the Cascade Drive-In, the complex began as an eight-screener, and by the time it closed the screen-count had increased to ten. Grand-opening advertising touted comfort designed rocking chair loungers, acres of free lighted parking and a spacious lobby and art gallery. Dolby Stereo was installed in several auditoriums, and two auditoriums featured 70mm projection and Six-Track Dolby Stereo and were THX certified. Seating was announced as 2,500 in total and varied between 500 in the largest auditorium and 200 in the smallest.

The debut bookings were “Amadeus", “The Annihilators", “Better Off Dead", “Cocoon", “E.T"., “One Magic Christmas", and “Rocky IV". (“Rocky IV” was presented via interlock on two screens).

The complex, despite being located in a smaller market, managed to book some 70mm prints, including “Rocky IV” (1985), “Top Gun” (1986), “Aliens” (1986), “Lawrence of Arabia” (1989 director’s cut re-issue), “Far and Away” (1992), and “Hoffa” (1992).

Dolby Digital was installed in 1992. DTS was installed in 1993. SDDS was installed in 1995.

Some of the venue’s longest-running bookings were “Top Gun” (32 weeks), “Home Alone” (27 weeks), “Titanic” (22 weeks), and “Jurassic Park” (16 weeks).

Showcase Cinemas Grand Rapids closed in 2003. The complex was razed and replaced with a Costco.
