Ziegelhof Cinema

The Ziegelhof Cinema was the first Oldenburg movie theatre to be built right after the war, opening on November 4, 1949 with a capacity of 878 seats and was first operated by Karl Born.

Later renamed the Ziegelhof-Lichtspiele Cinema, Karl Born operated the Ziegelhof Cinema until 1978 when Horst Urhahn took over the theatre. This made him an Oldenburg theatre monopolist following his leasing of two other theatres in the city.

At the end of 1978, he divided the large hall into a twin, and downgraded the number of seats completely to 270 seats. The two screens were named “Atelier” with 200 seats and “Oscar” with 70 seats, with the “Oscar” screen being built in the back part of the large hall. The two halls immediately served as serviced eating and (weirdly enough) smoking cinemas. The main film would briefly interrupt for a second intermission, so that way cinema-goers could either buy, have seconds, or refill food and drinks from the service van. What’s strange about it is that smoking was also allowed throughout the entire screening rather than just intermission.

The Ziegelhof Cinema closed its doors for the final time on December 13, 2000 due to the rise of the nearby CinemaxX alongside loss of patrons.
