This large municipal auditorium was constructed in 1920 as a memorial to those who served in World War I. It was in use late that year, but was not formally dedicated until November 30, 1921. A projection booth was located up in the balcony, and movies were part of the offerings, along with live performances and public meetings.
The building was used until 1977, at which point it was vacant for a short time. In 1980, the local historical society took over the building. The office spaces at the front of the building contain exhibits. The auditorium is used by the Hiawatha Area Arts and Theatre Society and it is in good condition.
