The Petaluma Morning Daily Courier reported the opening of the American Theater on May 30,1908, in the New American Hotel. Situated in the former bar and billiard room, the owners were Dahlmar and Gauron.

On January 22, 1912, the Courier reported that the former theater was being remodeled into a billiard and pool room.

The American Theatre is listed in American Motion Picture Directory 1914-1915 at 135 Main Street, which later became Petaluma Boulevard.

The American Hotel was razed in 1966, and the current location would be in Putman Plaza Park.
