The Opera House was constructed in 1902, on a lot which was the site of a bank before an 1896 fire. The two story brick structure used some of the remaining foundations, and incorporated a city hall at the rear, as the bank had.
The Opera House was the initiative of local businessman Frederick Charles Reese. The cost of the building was $16,000. Commercial space was located on the ground floor, with the auditorium above.
The theater was used only for live acts through 1914. The history is a bit unclear, but it seems it showed the occasional movie up until 1921, when it became a silent theater. It was open in this capacity until about 1931. The last stage play was in 1934.
It belonged to the local newspaper before being given to a restoration committee in 2001. The building today is in excellent shape, and is used for live performances and events.
