Grand Opera House

This large wooden opera house was constructed in 1906, replacing an older opera house that was located at 4th Street and E. Robinson Street.

Clad in sheet metal, this theatre was much larger than its predecessor, and had a large balcony. By 1914 movies were being shown here. The later history is a bit confused, since it was replaced by a later Grand Theatre on the courthouse square. Listings through the 1930’s show a Grand Theatre with 800 seats, which seems more plausible for this structure, although the purpose-built movie theatre Grand Theatre has a facade more in line with a 1920’s or earlier construction.

At any rate, this building vanished many years ago, and the site today is a vacant lot.

Unfortunately, the 1931 and 1944 maps are not available online. They would provide some assistance with the timeline.
