The Chitoseza Theater opened its doors on December 11, 1892 and was the first movie theater in the area to screen movies beginning on July 8, 1897. It was taken over by the Nagano Engeikan chain in April 1919 followed by the Nagano Engei Kogyo Company in January 1947.
In October 1972, Shochiku acquired the theater after signing a lease agreement, and the theater was renovated a few months later as well as a second screen. It was twinned in 1973 which went under the names Nagano Shochiku Aioi-za and Nagano Roxy Theaters. A third screen was added in April 1984 and the Nagano Roxy became the Nagano Roxy 1 & 2.
Shochiku operated the theater until March 2006 when its contract expired, and the theater became directly managed by Nagano Eiga Kyogo for the first time since 1972.
Screen 1 (or the main Shochiku theater) houses 176 seats while the two Roxy theaters house 264 seats in Screen 2 and 72 seats in Screen 3. All auditoriums featured installations of Dolby’s Digital and Surround sounds.
