The Nagano Municipal Central Theater located at the site of the former Kikuta Theater opened its doors on December 16, 1948 with Frederic March in “The Best Years Of Our Lives”. The original Kikuta Theater started life in 1927 in Tsuruga as a performing arts theater but was relocated in 1946 for unknown reasons. This started life as a Central Pictures theater screening American features, but this didn’t last long.

After just one year of operation, its operations went to Toho and the theater changed its name to the Nagano Toho Theater in 1949. As of 1953, there were a total of 80 movie theaters in Nagano Prefecture at the time. A second Toho theater, named the Nagano Toho Grand Theater, opened in 1966 nearby.

Both Toho theaters operated for four decades, but the popularity of the Nagano Grand Cinemas also nearby closed the Toho Grand on April 14, 2006, leaving the other Toho the only movie theater operating until the following year when it closed on April 15, 2007. The Sakenai Yamazaki Main Store now occupies the former theater site.
