The Shizuoka Toho Kaikan operated by the Nichiei Corporation was the last currently remaining movie theater in the movie district of the city following the closure of the popular Orion Theater. Although the Shizuoka mainly screens Toho films, there is no capital or business partnership between the theater, Nichiei, and Toho. It was never fully operated by the TOHO Cinemas chain.

The Shizuoka opened its doors on December 17, 1983 with three screens, all with the auditorium names Shizuoka Toho, Toho Plaza, and Toho Scalaza, each with over 300 seats. One of the opening films is the Japanese premiere of the Warner Brothers classic “Cannonball Run II” on one screen (which was later released in America the following year), although the rest of the opening attractions remain unknown at this time.

The Toho theater later expanded to four screens when a mini basement theater called the Verde Toho was opened on the first basement floor, increasing the number of screens to four in 1990. Japanese actor Ryo Kato remembers seeing many mixtures of Japanese and American films growing up, including Disney films “Toy Story 2” and “102 Dalmatians” in the early-2000s.

On February 5, 2011, a fifth AND sixth screens were added but was divided into two screens under the names CINE4 and CINE5, and the Shizuoka Toho Plaza on the fourth and fifth floors was divided into two screens, CINE2 and CINE3. The sixth screen, or CINE6, on the first basement floor was then closed, resulting in the current five-screen structure.

CINE1 housed 335 seats on the first and third floors. CINE 2 on the second floor housed 264 seats, CINE 3 on the fourth floor housed 52 seats, and CINE4 and CINE5 on the 6th floor housed 129 and 69 seats. CINE2 and CINE4 housed two wheelchairs, while CINE5 only housed one wheelchair.
