GREENWICH — A new movie theater is set to open in Greenwich, which lost its last dedicated movie theater in 2020.

Townsend Cinema, a 40-seat theater in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Old Greenwich, is set to open its doors to moviegoers on Thursday. The venue will screen new feature-length films seven days a week.

Shawn Nayyar, general manager of Hyatt Regency Greenwich, said in a recent statement on the opening, “With the latest releases, world-class cinema technology, and a luxe lounge feel, the cinema reimagines what entertainment can look like in the hospitality space. We know Townsend will become a centerpiece for connection and entertainment, as it will be perfect for a private movie screening, cozy weekend date night, corporate event or social gathering.“ The cinema will soon be offering cocktails, beer and wine, according to hotel management. The Townsend Bar at the hotel is near the movie theater. Two screenings will be offered Monday through Thursday, and four to five films will be run on weekends.

The Hyatt completed a major renovation costing nearly $40 million last year. The movie theater was developed in partnership with Monoplex, an international firm that specializes in hotel-theater installations. The first film to unspool at the new theater will be the new “Superman”.

The last theater in Greenwich was the old Bow Tie Cinema on Railroad Avenue, which was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Moviegoers in Greenwich could go to nearby theaters in Stamford or Port Chester, N.Y.

The Bruce Museum in Greenwich has been screening films on a limited basis.
