The Yurakuza Theatre opened its doors on October 24, 1946 on the site of a former Inn, and is located in Sanjo-dori as a two-story constructed in wooden and mortar. During its early days, it primarily hosted stage performances, but film screenings took over in the late-1950’s, eventually becoming a theater for adult films later on.
It was originally scheduled to close its doors when the Yurakuza La Scala Theatre nearby opened its doors in 1970 prior to the site of the original Yurakuza Theatre being sold to Sanei Mutual Bank, but unfortunately, a fire apparently caused by an overheated electrical appliance broke out in the early hours of December 14, 1969, demolishing the theater. Sanei ended up buying the property anyway, and the site of the former theater was reconstructed as a bank.
Meanwhile, the nearby Yuraku La Scala Theatre in the Kadofurichocho suburb of Nara City is another theater that opened close-by to the original Yurakuza Theatre, opening on March 8, 1970 with Henry Fonda in “Once Upon A Time In The West”. The Yuraku Scala was a foreign film roadshow theater located on the third floor of the Yuraku Tourist Building, adjacent to the west side of the nearby Yuraku Kaikan Hall.
Unfortunately due to the redevelopment of the Yuraku Tourist Building, the Yuraku La Scala closed for the final time on October 31, 1990, alongside of the nearby Yuraku Grand and Yuraku Film Theaters.
