The Warner Mycal Cinemas Kumamoto opened its doors on October 10, 2005 featuring eight screens, 1,756 seats, and 22 wheelchairs (with four each in Screens 1 and 2, and two in the remaining auditoriums). Although the theater was renamed the Aeon Cinema Kumamoto on July 1, 2013, the Aeon Mall Kumamoto received a very disastrous recent history.
The mall was received severe damage, such as liquefaction and ceiling collapse centered on specialty store buildings, when the two April 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes happened that killed 277 people and injuring 2,809 others total. As it went through a 2017 redevelopment and expansion, the mall highlighted its seismically reinforced ceilings and overall improvements to safety and resilience. The theater reopened on February 17, 2017.
A second (and even worse) tragedy happened on July 28, 2026, following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Kumamoto Prefecture, a massive gas leak explosion severely damaged a huge chunk of the Aeon Mall Kumamato killing two people. The Aeon Cinema Kumamoto ultimately became a victim, suffering catastrophic damage and partial structural collapse, receiving even far worse damage than the two 2016 earthquakes. Because of the major damage, the management forced the theater to close temporarily. As of the aftermath, it remains unclear on when the theater will reopen.
Screen 1 is the largest with 418 seats and Screen 3 is the smallest with 131 seats. The rest of the auditoriums have ranging capacities of 139-344. Screens 1, 2, and 8 have 3D installations.
