Chakeres Cinema 7 opened in the shell of a former Jo-Ann Fabrics in 1990. The theatre in 1996 added three screens to the left side (as they did with the Celina Cinema). Cinema 7then became Cinema 10. The Cinema 10 is located just down from Chakeres Melody Cruise-In and across from the old Show Boat Drive-In. In 2018 it was taken over by UEC Theatres.

Cinema 7 opened in March, 1990, and Cinema 10 opened in October, 1996…First movies screened in the new three-screen area were “The Chamber”, “The Glimmer Man”, and “That Thing You Do!”.
Also…the old Showboat Drive-In isn’t across the street from Cinema 10 but the land where the Showboat sat until its closing in 1986 is about a mile or two away from Cinema 10 and diagonally located from the Melody Cruise-In 1 &2. The land where the Showboat sat is still vacant.
The Cinema 7/10 is typical of the “shoebox style” theatres that were built in the 1980’s and into the 90’s. No auditorium décor to speak of. At least when the theatre opened it had stereo. Springfield’s two biggest theatres at the time, the State and Regent, didn’t have stereo (though the Regent had the speakers for it, they stopped using them many years before. Stereo was about the only positive thing one could say for the Cinema 10. Small, character-less, screening rooms. Of late, also not very well maintained. Springfield deserves to have one of the big chains come in and build a new theatre with stadium seating, large screens, etc. Also, the State and Regent should be restored. To think, these showplaces were closed so that the Cinema 7/10 could open. Progress!
Theatre has been sold to UEC Theatres ending Chakeres theatres in 2018. http://www.chakerestheatres.com/ is now inactive.
