Celboy, here is an article from IMAX where they state the laser projection can do 1:43 aspect ratio http://collider.com/imax-laser-projection-details-new-cameras-greg-foster/

I don’t think IMAX has released full details of their new camera yet (if I remember correctly, they didn’t do so with the 3D digital camera last year until a couple weeks before Transformers came out, even though it had been in use for a long time) so we will have to wait and see. I’d be hopeful they would keep the classic ratio with it, but yeah it could just be 1.9.

Celboy, while the IMAX system is “jointly modified” by Arri and IMAX from the Alexa 65 design, it is important to note the Alexa 65 (which was used to shoot Inarritu’s The Revenant) is somewhat different from the new IMAX digital camera (which will debut on sections of Captain America: Civil War and used for the entirety of the next Avengers films).

IMAX has said that the digital camera will use IMAX aspect ratio, I assume it will be the classic one that 15/70 used and is now in the lasers systems (which hopefully would be widespread by May 2018 when the third Avengers releases), though possible it could be the 1.9 digital IMAX aspect ratio.

amcbayplaza13, neither Lincoln Square nor any IMAX theater is showing a 15/70 print of Tomorrowland, it is just playing in digital IMAX at Lincoln (though some other locations, sadly none near NYC, have it in IMAX Laser).

I’m also pretty sure Jurassic World will not have any film prints: Interstellar is the only Hollywood feature in the last year and half to get a 15/70 release, and many indications are that no others are coming (IMAX has been quiet on outright confirming that, but if JW were to break this trend I have to imagine there would be talk about it by now).

Saw Avengers: Age of Ultron here on its opening Friday night: the middle section was nearly full, but the sides and the balcony mostly empty.

My friend (who either has never been to the Ziegfeld or not in years) also really liked the theater- certainly hope something is worked out so it can remain open.

The Hollywood Reporter stated that James Dolan is getting frustrated with it losing money, and it is in danger of closing again.

It would certainly be a sad day for me (I try and go as much as a I can, went to 5 films plus the premiere for The Imitation Game here last year, and would probably see Age of Ultron here if it plays the Ziegfeld) but true that it has been a long time since I’ve seen it anywhere near full for a regular screening.

Well, the transition from IMAX film to digital was done over a Mon-Thurs period if I remember correctly, but I think this would take longer. And with The Water Diviner scheduled to play starting April 24th, and then the big summer movie season, my guess is the transition would happen in the fall (like it did last time).

Interestingly, the Empire 25 seems to have nothing scheduled for IMAX between Furious 7 and Tomorrowland, so that would seem like the time to do such a transition.

Given the good response to Interstellar here, I hope the Ziegfeld also gets The Hateful Eight next year. Seems like a perfect fit for the 70mm roadshow release Tarantino is planning.

I did notice a vertical scratch briefly in the middle of the film (lasted for maybe 30 seconds), and some minor other film projection related issues, but for the most part it looked great.

There were no sound issues when I went, though I have heard about those problems with other screenings (IMAX in particular), and since I went to the first showings, it is possible issues have developed since then.

Now that Interstellar is out and the film projector is being used again, any word on if Hobbit Pt. 3 will indeed screen on an IMAX 3D film print. I saw it mentioned back here in a comment a couple months ago, and IMDB lists a 70mm IMAX version in their tech specs, but I’m a bit skeptical given some word that Interstellar would be the last 70mm IMAX print.

If Hobbit does indeed have such a release here, I would book my tickets for that to perhaps give IMAX 70mm one last viewing (I did recently see a documentary in IMAX film as I see some museums are still using that, but for a studio film I haven’t seen one since Catching Fire). If not, I’ll probably go for HFR 3D at a regular theater like the last one (I do have some issues with the format still but it is a unique experience, and I felt they improved the HFR effect in the second movie over the first).

Saw Interstellar at the first Tues showing, while the vast majority of seats were empty (may have been as little as 200 people there) it still had to be the most people I’d seen there since Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

I’m always a bit nervous when theaters are first trying out equipment or using something they haven’t in a long time, but the experience went off well and much of the film looked great in 70mm, and for those asking they did close the curtains and re-opened them during the trailers (I know some were asking about that move and it drew applause).
