“Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them” will screen in 70mm @ Archlight beginning 11/17 (at least though opening weekend). Oddly, though, no showings are in the Dome, at least not as of this post.

Strange since Seattle Cinerama is already selling tickets to their 70mm screenings through the first week of release.

No, the old VHS and LaserDisc Special Editions were an attempt at reconstructing the Roadshow version but were not complete and the additional scenes were in very rough shape and, in some cases, contained a distorted/squeezed picture. While also not fully complete, the Criterion is the closest to the original Roadshow cut and runs almost 15 minutes longer than those editions.

BigJoe – I have a copy of the final cutting notes dated January 10, 1964. They have specific instructions for the projectionist where the cuts are to be made to the print they are running (the roadshow theatres would later be sent new prints after the negative was cut). So you can assume the longer cut ran until that time and no later.

The Criterion Blu-ray that contains the Roadshow cut was made from the best surviving elements (and stills) to recreate it. It’s all there is. Watching it, you can see why most of those scenes were cut. IMO, the shorter version is superior.

i was rather disappointed by the recent Criterion Collection blu-ray disc of the restored roadshow cut of Its A Mad Mad Mad Mad World. while it may have been the full roadshow cut the various elements used were far from in prime shape. which is where my question comes in.

it is my understanding that like its NYC engagement
at the Warner Cinerama IAMMMMW was tweaked while it was still in its roadshow run at the Dome. in other
words if you saw the film at the beginning of its
roadshow run it was a slightly different cut than
if you saw it at the end. so for how long was the
original 3hr. 12min. cut used at the Dome?

Yeah, it doesn’t seem like anyone sees movies here anymore, they just gripe about experiences from 3-4 years ago.

For my money, the classic movie palaces (the Dome, Village, Chinese and Egyptian) are still the best cinematic experiences in L.A. The Landmark? AMC? Sure, if you like your theaters made from a cookie cutter.

I’ve been seeing movies at the Dome for 20 years and I’ve never had a bad experience. I can’t say I’m a fan of the other theaters on site, but as long as the Dome is standing, I’ll gladly pay for parking and fork my $17 over to Archlight.

RogerA: yeah the sony’s were a bit early on their tech but hold up. (work in post, colorist) AMC’s in LA are very good (at least the Burbank one and Century City). I’ve done many preview screenings there and have installed and managed projectors in both (as well as at the Arclight and Chinese)(used to work for Technicolor dealing with projection to mastering DCPs and got deep into color science. and work in post as and Editor/AE, film,TV)

Seattle has a new screen that’s normal. Google pics. When they installed the Christie 6p dual laser projectors they put in a new screen and ATMOS.

I hate the dome. The digital projection has always sucked and there’s only one decent spot for good sound. They have moved in the right direction with the dual laser projection but two things left: they need to replace the screen with a slightly curved screen that’s high gain. (like the Cinerama in Seattle did leaving the original Cinerama screen behind the new one) In the past they’ve either just cut off the edges of the picture (right up or slightly over title safe (I’ve seen credits cut off)) or digitally warped the pictures at the edges to the screen. This is ok if it’s only a little (like for slightly curved screens) but the Cinerama screen is too much. This has always been the biggest issue for me for this screen.

2nd thing: fix the sound of that’s scientifically possible. Probably a lot of speakers and custom baffles with custom delays and way too much work and money. Find a way to acoustically make an oval room square.

All in the name of preservation right? Oh and the seats suck. Have they replaced those yet? I swore off the Arclight 3-4 years ago.

And not to mention what a horrible company Arclight is and the prices they charge is insane. Even for the normal screens non-3D off peak. Then you have to pay for parking too. What a mess. Only public theaters I bother with in LA are The Landmark and a few AMCs for their Dolby cinema options. (And the fact that AMCs have been 4K for years with the Sonys. And random… Not impressed with IMAX laser system. All the wait and what a miss. It might be okay for 2d but please forget 3D. and Dolby is the only 3D system that looks half way decent. Too much color shifting, no contrast due to the poor light output, and glasses always degrade the image because it’s cheap plastic that isn’t optical grade. Ok done venting. ;)

Just in time for its 35th anniversary, Steven Spielberg’s 1981 classic “Raiders of the Lost Ark” is screening at the Dome Sunday, June 19 (Father’s Day) @ 4pm and Wednesday, June 22 @ 7:30. If you live in the area and can make either showing, here’s your chance to see arguably the greatest action/adventure film ever made in one of the greatest theaters ever constructed. I expect some reports on this one.

have you seen it on HBO lately? They cropped it from the scope ratio and the audio is much lower than the Blu-Ray. Thank god I rented it on disc from Netflix and enjoyed the action. I think the Revanant will be more oscar worthy than Mad Max as history suggests with the exception of Titanic and LOTR: ROTK.

I saw the 70mm version of the Hateful Eight at the Landmark and the presentation was just bad. More and more I just watch movies at home.

As long as the DC Uptown is being compared to the Cinerama Dome, I will point out the 3rd such historic theater that I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy which is the Seattle Cinerama. That also has huge curved screen.

It can if there’s no 70mm option available…
