Joe Good, a man that had a dream to open a theatre that would play many of the pictures that never would have hit an Augusta movie screen died Dec. 3 2009 at the VA HOSPITAL here in Augusta. Joe was a veteran of World war 2. Fought in the Battle of the Bulge, got two Purple Hearts and was a P.O.W. until the Russians freed him.
Never understood how you got some the movies you did to the ART theatre and later joining the Kung-Fu craze with CINEMA 1. Thanks Joe Good.

I remember clearly even though i was not working at the theatres when CLOCKWORK ORANGE was not allow to play in Augusta, Chief Beck the type of Southern law enforcer you see in movies made it clear in the paper that if it Played at THE IMPERIAL he would raid the theatre. My question is how did the ART theatre get away with the trash they were showing, And the Miller playing MIDNIGHT COWBOY and WHAT DO YOU SAY TO A NAKED LADY? Both X rated.
I only saw the R rated Version ,so i don’t know what could have been in the X rated CLOCKWORK to get him so uptight. Heck, a buddy and myself had to drive to Athens ,Ga to see CLOCKWORK.
The rating system is voluntary anyway. I was sure to always bring that up to managers and they thought I was a smart ass. It just never made sense Joe Goode could play X just a few blocks down the Street while the IMPERIAL was given the riot Act!

It is amazing that while this theatre constantly played X rated films i cannot once remember the police ever bother Joe Goode’s Tiny theatre.I assumed since they were mainly european arty films it was not considered slut.BUT THEY WERE STILL X-RATED.
The ART THEATRE wasopened by Joe Goode in 1966,It was located on 555 broad street in Augusta Georgia.Mr. Goode was a vetran union projectionist who i guess wanted to get on the ownership side.It opened as a arty theatre showing mainly european films such as AMAN AND A WOMAN and THE FOX.These were for the most part rated x, but this was a middle 60s adult film. today it might be rated pg 13. they did show the movie GIRLY and THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE and the Peter Boyle movie JOE.Goode’s concessionstand was about five feet long right behind the box office,It advertised in self as an underground theatre becuse moviegoers were actully in basement type theatre. It seated about 100 people,By the time the Kung Fu rage started Goode switched the theatre to Cinema One were it played mainly BRUCE LEE type films, And boy could he book them in. This Theatre was located in the red light district on downtown far away from the Miller and Imperial theatres. I only saw A Bruce Lee double feature there in the early 70s. It closed in the Mid 80s.

There was a theater called the Mojestic. Was this the same cinema. I remember going to the Mojestic in 1965 and seeing many double features there while station at Fort Gordon, The mojestic also has a balcony and use onces when I was station there. If anyone knows more about this theater let me know.
