Those 48, 56 and 70 seat auditoriums here are more like standard 96, 112 and 140 theaters because the seats here have extra space in between them for the tables and servers.

See this image for instance of a new auditorium here: http://www.rereleasenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/image4-1-300x200.jpg

BTW, four of the seven theaters here (1, 2, 4 and 6) are supposed to be have 35mm capability.

I don’t think we’ll see many new theaters with 600, 700 seat screens opening, as nice as those auditoriums are. Recliner seats and dine-in tables are taking over movie theaters. Possibly IMAX would be the only place for those kind of seat counts as they use non-reclining leather chairs for their new Laser locations.

Screen size however doesn’t necessarily suffer from lower seat count. When a 700 seat auditorium with old chairs gets converted to a 350 auditorium with recliners or dine-in tables, the screen still remains the same.

Also: this theater will be showing Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman and Vice. Movies that Nitehawk in Williamsburg is not likely to get.

@klstra Based on my experience most (if not all) people recline. There is also lots of leg room so it should be very, very rare that someone’s view is obstructed. But if you want to be really sure I’d recommend just getting tickets for the balcony.

@guolei329: Well, that’s not entirely true. The Dolby here does have stadium seating on the four balcony rows. There is no stadium seating on the ground level, but all the seats recline so there shouldn’t be any obstruction of the screen.

@pL86: The 70mm projector doesn’t have much to do with Dolby or the Loews. It can be used in other auditoriums here as well, as it has been before. markp knows more about this though.

Was the Dolby screen here round on the corners? If it was (and pictures suggest it was) then it’s not the original screen, which I think is most likely. I wonder what they did with the original screen.

@celboy No, it doesn’t have to do with that. I wish it would get rid of the effect. For instance the IMAX here at Lincoln Square is a floating screen and it still shows the speckle effect.

The way I understand it a floating screen is good to get a bigger screen when installing to a wall would limit the size.

From the ekran article: “Lightweight and compact construction of such frame and the ‘wrap-around’ system of installing the projection surface allow maximization of projected image size to the total available area of the wall behind the screen. The use of such screen frame is recommended in situations when the availability of the area of the wall behind the screen is limited and the client requires the maximum size cinema screen.” http://www.ekran.co/s3-cinema-screens.html

The screen at the Loews before was mounted to a wall, so I don’t think they chose a floating screen because they wanted more space used but rather because that’s the standard with Dolby Cinema screens. Maybe also to better install the Dolby speakers behind the screen.

The way I understand it even if there is room on the sides, a floating screen cannot be masked.

http://www.ekran.co/s3-cinema-screens.html “The nature of this construction and its destination makes it impossible to equip it with screen masking.”

That’s also why a lot (most/all?) IMAX screens don’t have masking.

I share your frustration with pillarboxing. But I am glad they went with scope since more movies come out in that aspect ratio. If the screen would have been flat there’d be a lot of letterboxed shows.

It will be interesting to see how much the 3D Dolby will cost. But at least there are matinee prices for the Dolby here. Regal for instance doesn’t provide matinee prices for their 4DX.

digital3d commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Nov 4, 2018 at 7:38 pm

I think the new Dolby here is a floating screen, so masking it isn’t possible. Correct me if I’m wrong though. From the pictures it appeared as a floating screen.

$26.49 isn’t the most expensive ticket in NYC. Regal charges $30 for 4DX 3D. Also, as a tip: on Tuesdays the price gets reduced to $17.25 for all Stubs members.

Seat count doesn’t equal screen size, but either way the Rockaway one has 165 seats while the Linc Square one as 290.

The new Dolby has stadium seating on the balcony. Rest is regular seating. Seat count appears to be 290 according to Fandango, which is a bit more than Empire’s Dolby (219).

Actually I’d guess 70MM because if it would be Laser, it should be more than 4 theaters that get the re-release. Either way I’m super-happy that we’re getting this re-release. Will be a way to experience a historic film on a historic screen. The Dark Knight was a game-changer for IMAX and Lincoln Square was one of the few places to experience it in all its glory back when it came out. Thank you, IMAX!

When did it open in only 2 theaters? In November or in January? If in November, then those 2 theaters were 2 of the 4.

If in January, then those 2 theaters were 2 of the 815.

A wide release is commonly known, as others have mentioned, to be 600+ theaters. CMBYN, in January, opened in 815 theaters. That’s more than 600, so it’s a wide release. The November release was a limited release.

digital3d commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Jul 10, 2018 at 6:01 pm

I’m not sure I understand the question.

CMBYN had two released, one in November 2017 and one in January 2018. See http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=callmebyyourname.htm You can see on that website that the limited opening weekend was 4 theaters and the wide opening weekend was 815 theaters.

It opened up as wide later. Many films get a limited release first (mostly NYC and LA theaters) and then a wide one later.

digital3d
digital3d commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Jul 9, 2018 at 5:31 pm

I think it comes from the world “nationwide”, meaning it’s not a limited release such as New York and LA only.

The crowds at this particular location really have trouble sitting in their assigned seats. They even had employees check tickets at the door which I had never seen at any other location before.

Theater hopping has been very common there for years. That’s changing now as all the screens have reserved seating.

@HorwardBHaas

Okay well I don’t want to argue or anything of the sorts. The Loews screen always felt small and oddly curved to me, almost like part of the image was cropped. Hopefully the new Dolby screen will address that.

If you liked it that’s great and I hope you won’t be disappointed by the Dolby replacement.

Very happy to hear it’s becoming a dolby! I wonder if they’ll keep the balcony.

The dolby would also mean the first recliner seats at Linc Square since the IMAX renovation didn’t bring any.

Personally I agree that the decoration is very nice, but I’d rather have a big premium screen with recliner seats than a small-ish one without stadium seating. But that’s just me.

I wonder if the dolby will be laser.

@HowardBHaas: A lot of premieres happened at the Loews auditorium. (Given that it was the biggest non-IMAX one and had a balcony). So if you find some pictures of those on social media or yelp/googlereviews you should be able to see the interior of the auditorium.

I saw Solo in a different theater and I felt it was quite dark at times (especially at the beginning), so probably an artistic choice. I got used to it though and it wasn’t noticeable anymore at the exterior scenes toward the end.

No, Lincoln Square didn’t charge extra for the 70mm shows of Phantom Thread. You could see it before noon for the $8 matinee price.

Alamo Drafthouse also charges extra for 70mm. Some theaters do that.
