I saw the trailer for The Master this weekend, in a movie theater, and the trailer was shown “flat” (1.85) albeit in 35mm. This movie is getting rave reviews. I will probably see it here, at the Ziegfeld.
I confirmed with a few people who saw the movie that the 70mm prints are matted to 1.85 as well.
Just wondering… wouldn’t the nature of the 65mm negative render the aspect ratio 2.20:1, unless the film was matted in-camera? Perhaps PT Anderson cropped the image to 1.85:1 for 35mm and digital presentations and the 70mm prints will be true to their native aspect ratio? Just guessing. My grasp of the technological aspects involved here is not very solid.

i have been going to the Ziegfeld since it opened Dec. 1969 with the reserved seat engagement of “Marooned”. which brings me to my question. recently the theater has had special quick exclusive engagements like the 2 week run of “The Princess and The Frog” before it opened wide. to which does anyone remember what the theater’s last exclusive regular open ended 1st run engagement was?
the last one i can think of is Oct. 1996
release of the Katz/Harris restoration of
“Vertigo”.

Some films that were 1.85 and 70MM were shown like scope. An example is Fame in 1981 and The Rose in 1979.I would be curious to hear how they do this film. Mark_L is there a site to go to that tells you if a film is in scope or 1.85?
Does this mean that the 1.85: 1 frame will be within 70mm’s 2.20: 1 frame with black spaces on the sides?
Anyway, I am happy for moviegoers in LA, NY, Austin, Boston, Silver Spring etc… Too bad not a single theater here in Chicago were willing to install a projector. Unless my good fortunes change within the next few weeks, I’ll be seeing it in 4k at River East, or 35mm at theLandmark Century.
Surprising that the film isn’t in scope. PTA works compositional wonders on a wide-screen canvas. In fact, I can’t think of a single feature that he’s directed, which hasn’t been 2.35:1 … not even the his first, “Hard Eight,” or the offbeat “Punch Drunk Love.”
MASTER is 1.85:1. All prints have DATASAT (DTS) sound…no mag. Sounds like Weinstein is adding a few more 70mm engagements than originally expected.
This is wonderful news. I could not see how they couldn’t have this film at the Ziegfeld. Let’s hope it is 70MM scope not 70MM flat. I hated films that were filmed in 70MM flat like A Star Is Born and Altered States. To me it isn’t true 70MM unless it’s also scope.
Now lets hope they actually have someone who knows how to thread 70mm. I last ran 70mm myself back in 1989. Since then all these chains have gotten rid of union projectionists who knew how to do it and replaced them with managers and popcorn poppers. And if they are going to platter it, oh my, take your eye off it for one minute and you can splice the soundtrack backwards and not even realize it. I for one and going to sit back and wait for all the comments here and the Village East theatre page as well once the film starts.
This will be a regular engagement as opposed to special screening, correct? The film’s limited release begins the week before, on September 14th (including the Village East booking). According to imdb.com, the 21st looks like a wide release date.

As to the Master in 70mm at the Ziegfeld: yea! Yea! yea!
According to the Clearview website, The Master is opening on September 21 at the Ziegfeld in 70mm.
I also think Clearview should have fought to get it at the Ziegfeld too. It could have played 70MM at both theaters.
Me too Ed. I just saw that they have a 1200 seat theater. I live in NC and there is no place close that this will play in 70mm.
Yes, Mike, that is very disappointing news. Along with the story that the Weinstein Company wasn’t willing to support PT Anderson’s desire to have this film distributed as widely as possible in its native format. I’m hoping that the Village East has its 70mm capabilities in the original big auditorium?
Why is the 70mm print of The Master NOT coming to the Ziegfeld. This really sucks as tghis wil probably be the last movie shot in 70mm.
The Ziegfeld used to have changeover and platter capability. Has that status changed?

I believe a couple of 70mm prints were screened when the Ziegfeld was still doing the “classics” series a few years ago.
