@moviebuff82 yeah they were also, I believe, the first theater in NJ to use the back speaker, I think they put that in for TPM.

Is it screens 3 and 4 that are the super large ones? I forget. I just know that two of the side by side auditoriums here are huge and have, AFAIK, the largest two screens in all of central and northern NJ. They are supposed to be 70'x30'.

Although the sound is usually way too loud in the IMAX theater the picture is usually very nice and bright and rich and nice and crisp (for non-4k). I like the IMAX 3D better than the Real3D. Even the 3D IMAX here is very nice and bright.

Ever since the projector for fathom events in #16 broke, all those fathom event movies have had somewhat dim projection with very strong contrast and a little over-saturated and almost zero shadow detail. It almost looks like when some double expands 16-235 video levels instead of single expands since that bumps up saturation, kills shadow detail and boosts contrast a bit. I don’t know that the white clipped though.

The Martian in IMAX (when it came to IMAX a second time) was way too loud. The loudest parts either actually bottomed out some of the IMAX speakers or maybe it created some sort of vibration in the entire theater structure since the few loudest parts had some nasty dissonant vibration going on. You could actually hold your ears shut and it was still painfully loud even during some simple dialogue scenes. I don’t know so many theaters crank to 11 these days despite more and more complaints popping up all over.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the new digital IMAX here? On online ticketing it looks like only 26 seats wide, however, it shows the screen way, way wider than the seating. If that is to scale is it as wide as the old true IMAX only just not as tall now or is it also a lot less wide? Is it any bigger than the typical digital IMAX screen? Or just the same (or even smaller, going by only 26 seats across)?

And I think the DC and Philly are dome IMAX, which IMO tends to be weird for regular movies.

Going up to Jordan’s north of Boston would be the only option in the entire ultra-populated great NYC area.

Still seems bizarre to me. To remove the 70mm right before SW just to get laser like 1-2 months sooner? No film is bigger than SW. Nothing is as impressive. Ridiculous decision.

Awfully jealous of the 96' IMAX laser screen at the Chinese.

Yeah I would have come in for the 15/70 Awakens on 100', but heck no for the digital when having to come in from the suburbs. Interstellar was amazing in 15/70 as was Dark Knight as all the others. Man, what a bummer, finally I thought we’d see SW in gigantic IMAX scale. Absurd. And instead of going laser, they just shut down the Nyack IMAX. So basically 270 miles to see it in real IMAX if you live in this area. Pretty sad for such a rich populated area as the greater NYC region. We really have the saddest theaters in this region.

Is it true that they made a few screens much larger than before? Are the biggest ones now as large as Rockaway’s largest?

Yeah, saw Star Wars there on opening day! Man unreal! In the grand palace screen. My god when that Star Destroyer came rocking across the screen and went on forever. Holy cow nobody had every experienced anything remotely like that before. Also saw ESB there in the grand screen. Huge screen and it actually had surround sound way back in 1977. Many places were still mono only then and few with stereo. This had full on Dolby Surround. And the screen was gigantic compared to all the little mall screens that came in all over.

Even today with the digital IMAX screens, I don’t think any in NJ are quite as large as the screen here had been.

I think two of the screens in the Manville, NJ theater though are actually at least as large. I’ve heard claims two there are 70'.

An absolute crime that AMC just closed down the giant, true IMAX at Palisades. I think that one was 72'-75' wide and with the full true IMAX height. They ‘replaced’ it with an absurdly small digital IMAX screen, not even one of the larger such around. Criminal.

How does the big 100' screen here work for this SW release then? They will show it in digital 3D on that screen with not just letterboxing but pillar boxing too???? What width of screen do they even use? It doesn’t like it’s worth the incredible bother to see it on this screen then if a local digital IMAX can do it at 60' width then right?

And go figure, JJ is saying that everyone NEEDS to see it on a real IMAX 3D screen. Yeah, where???? One theater in the entire country????

So basically one or two theaters in LA are the only place in the entire U.S. to see it in true giant screen with the 1.43 for the special scene and 3D?

Blast so even here not in IMAX 15/70 3D??? Man I was so wanting to ONCE see some Star Wars film like that. I can’t believe they killed off that format right before SW? How insane is that? Pretty would;’ve drive for miles to experience that! They just shut down the Palisades NYAK true IMAX 3D theater. Man Avatar and Prometheus and so on, in true giant IMAX 3D were so awesome, can’t believe they kill the format right before SW comes out? How utterly beyond brainless could they be to do that, JUST before SW??

Jeez what a sick joke. I can’t believe they shut down the true giant IMAX here right before SW? What on Earth were they thinking! People would driven for miles to see it on that screen. I was. Was so excited to finally see a SW at the start on a true, giant IMAX screen and they close it! Heck, if I’m driving to Palisades to see it on this crappy joke of a new IMAX. It’s far worse and even smaller than the one 10 minutes away from me. Man I was finaly going to see it in real IMAX and they put in this atrocious junk of a screen and kill the amazing one. The only one without the hideous expense and mess of getting into Manhattan.

Jeez. Is there a single other true giant IMAX anywhere in the NJ region without having to go into Manhattan left? I think was it right? WHo the heck closes it right befor SW? at least milk SW first.

Jeez, can’t believe it! The only true option in our entire region without the utter mess and expense of going into NYC! And to close it the year Star Wars comes out??? That would’ve been sold out day in and day out! Who closes that screen right before that! I was counting on this theater so badly for SW. Jeez.

Wow, a shame to hear what happened to Paul. I was wondering why I never saw him there anymore. He was a longtime staple at this theater.

@thebrat – man that is a shame to hear about the misalignment/aberrations at #10. I haven’t seen one in that auditorium since that Disney Bears film, which sadly had fringing. They have the same problem with it’s sister auditorium on the other side #7.

As for the volume though, the last time I was in #10 is was deafeningly too loud (as are most, but not all of the auditoriums here, some seem to change volume every time you go, others are the same for years).

Well all I can say is flagship or not, Paramus was a complete ghost town when I checked out Classic 80s showcase there. Like TWO other people! You could’ve heard a pin drop in there. When they had it at Rockaway the last few years it was always a decent crowd at least and people were really into it. I don’t know what they were thinking since the 80s stuff of any sort (even current films set in the 80s) seem to do better at the Rockaway location than most others so why they pulled it from here and made it Paramus flagship only, I have no clue.

Maybe it’s not a flagship, but it used to carry the classic showcase all the same. And it’s certainly the flagship for the northwest part of the state.

Anyone else disappointed that AMC cut back the AMC Classics showcase for this winter to like only a handful of theaters in the entire nation? One theater per state (other than a few large states and even there it’s just a few)? It’s just about to the point of why even bother. What will they get with that like 50-100 people seeing each move per state??

It’s pretty annoying that AMC Rockaway pulled out. And why? I don’t get it. How many people do they get there in on a Wednesday night in the winter? Not that many from what I’ve seen and certainly not more than I saw them get when they ran the classics showcase in past years (and they didn’t even do ANY promotion for them).

Only a single theater in all of NJ gets the lineup for this winter (and it’s a nightmare location for traffic for the showtimes): Big, Princess Bride, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Groundhog Day, Sleepless in Seattle.

What the heck is going on with the Rockaway AMC?
