The Dixon Theatre was opened in 1922 and built on the site of the old Dixon Opera House, which was destroyed by a fire in 1920. Movies lasted for six decades at the Dixon, but it, like many others, fell into disrepair and by the end of the 1980s was shuttered.

Fortunately, the theater has now been restored and reopened as a concert venue and community center and is also used by the local theater guild.

I am interested in knowing when and how this theater was restored. Also, could you please advise me as to who headed up the the project? Thanks.

I produced and directed several musicals here from 99-2001 the theatre had been renovated by local donaions. A local theatre group still does musicals here. The theatre itself is run by a board of directors who do a great job at keeping the building going. The seats do number about 1200 and has 6 luges 3 on each side. The stage is a little cramped but the fly system is in great shape. It also has dressing rooms below. The lobby is also in great shape. As far as i know they have not used any grants. They had 1 local angel(as a board member called him) who donated the most money to the theatre. If in Dixon contact the theatre for a showing you wont be disapointed.

They have replaced the marquee since the photo above was taken and it looks great. They were re-upholstering the seats as they could afford them and that project may be finished by now. I will try to get a current picture of the front and interior.

A Barton theater organ size 3/9 was installed in the Dixon Theater in 1922. Note: Divided Manual.
