Royal Theatre

The Royal Theatre was situated in the Mongkok district on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. It opened to business on 26th January 1960, with “They Came to Cordura”. The theatre was Hong Kong’s first 70mm cinema and its first 70mm film, Walt Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”, was shown from 4th February to 26th February 1960, at increased prices.

The advertisement of “Sleeping Beauty” read:

“A new page in cinema history

The FIRST 70mm picture ever to be shown in the Colony

Commencing today

At the new de-luxe theatre"

It showed first run English language films in the 1960’s and 1970’s. In the 1980’s, first run Cantonese language films were shown until its closure on 21th May 1990.

On 7th November 1978, a fire broke out at the theatre near the screen, and it had to be closed for several days for renovation.

A commercial complex with shopping mall and two mini cinemas was built on the site of the theatre and the adjacent Empress Theatre.

I also found a 1960 photo of the Royal:

I also bought a T-shirt recently with a Star Wars ad on it. Four cinemas were showing Star Wars first run: Ocean(TST), Park(Causeway Bay), Imperial(Wan Chai) and Royal.
