The Irving opened on June 10, 1926 with Julian Eltinge in "Madam, Behave!", a second-run attraction. It was built at a cost of $250,000 by Golden State Theatres.

For the next 26 years it served as a second and/or third run neighborhood house serving the inner Sunset district.

It closed on July 8, 1962 and was torn down.

Stylistically it had many interior ornamental details in common with the Rivoli Theatre on San Pablo near University in Berkeley, still standing as a Smart & Final store, with the auditorium ornament mostly intact and visible.
