Built in the late 1960's as an adults-only theater, it became a controversial place since it was located in the conservative Miramar area. For months, sermons at the area church touched on the topic of the Miramar adults-only theater.

For its early years, it showed soft core porno such as "I Am Curious Yellow"…then it moved into hard core.

Then a funny thing happened, the owner, tired of criticism, changed it to a mainstream theater, but it was a disaster. So it became a hard core porno house again.

As hard core porno moved to video, it became an art house venue. And right now, it is the only place in Puerto Rico where you can see indie movies and art house fare.

I was involved in the tripling of this cinema. The building was originally built as a radio studio. Cinema one still has the sound proofing baffles on the side walls and was sized to handle bands and orchestras. Cinema #2 was craved out of two smaller radio studios and Cinema #3 was originally the private screening cinema for Caribbean Cinemas who operate the Fine Arts in conjunction with a partner. There are future plans to add two more screens on the second floor.

I am athrill to learn that Antonioni's The Passenger will soon be playing at Cine Fine Arts; I think this movie is a superlative, spellbinding, transcendent, etc., must-see.

The Fine Arts is famous for putting posters and showing trailers for movies they eventually never show. Anyway, I do hope thet show "The Passenger"

Caribbean Cinemas is opening a new Fine Arts Cinema in Hato Rey. It will feature 6 screens, stadium seating and will serve wine ect. The Fine Arts in Miramar will close and will be remodeled.
Let's hope this is true since most of the time when theaters are closed down to be "remodeled" they are never re-opened.

Caribbean Cinemas isnt closing the Miramar Fine Arts. For them, that cinema its a little gold mine and have its own clients that always go there. They have been planning the renovation for a long time but since this is the only fine arts cinema, they cant close it for the renovation period. So they decide to make this new cinema, since they have to renovate the old one and second to have a 'back-up' cinema since plaza las americas is always full of clients (since the Cinevista closed its doors). Everyone told me that they will not close the Miramar Fine Arts...but who knows!

Does anyone knows if the new Fine Arts will have a Digital Screen like Cine en Ballajá did?

I've heard there are differences between the Caribbean Cinemas people and the owner of the building and there's now a big probability that the Fine Arts in Miramar will close down. Let's hope they do reach an agreement.

The year the Miramar Theatre went mainstream I believe was either 1975 or 1976, according to the following lineup that I remember played there during the mid 70's. "Cabaret," "Young Frankenstein," The Reincarnation of Peter Proud," "Barry Lyndon," "The Adventures of Sherlocks Holmes' Smarter Brother," Fellini's "Amarcord," etc. I'm not sure if "Emmanuelle" premiered here or at the Excelsior. I know it played at the Condado Cinema but I don't think it premiered there. When the Miramar re opened as the Fine Arts with only one screen, Fellini's "Ginger and Fred" played there, as well as Almodovar's "High Heels," "Radio Days," "Blue Velvet," "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and her Lover," and "Dangerous Liasons." It added two more theatres. The first theatre is the largest one and it is the old Miramar Theatre intact. Its size was not altered to add the other two small screening rooms. When it was the Miramar, the steps went directly from the sidewalk up to the entrance. It had a long (burgundy, I believe) canopy. For the Fine Arts it was changed to the maze-like steps that are currently there. If you want to know how was the auditorium of the old Miramar Theatre, check out theatre 1 in Fine Arts. It's all there.

The Oscar nominated "Kiss of the Spider Woman" starring William Hurt, Raul Julia, and Sonia Braga premiered at the Fine Arts in 1985 when it still had one screen.
