This theater was originally to be called the Crest when it was being built, but by the time the theater opened on June 8, 1966 it was simply called the Cinema Theatre. The Missouri Governor at that time was Warren Hernes and spoke at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Its opening was heralded with a modern concession area and the latest in motion picture projection. It had climate controlled heating and cooling with plush American Recliner seats. The box office was located in the lobby of the theater.

This theater was part of the Commonwealth Theatre chain and was the last big auditorium in Columbia, Missouri. It closed in 1999.

Plans for the proposed Crest Theatre were announced in Boxoffice Magazine, February 1, 1965. The project was designed by Milton Costlow & Associates, architects of many theaters for the Commonwealth circuit.
