Texan Theater on cloudy night

Built in 1939, the Texas Theater is a quintessential small town movie house that serves a population of 7,600. It was operated by Long Theaters. It retained the ‘Texas’ name until at least 1950. Later renamed Texan Theater, in 1994 it was saved from almost certain death when new owners bought the theater.

A year later, for a mere $150,000, the theater was restored with new seats, surround sound, and a new projector. The theater has shown a modest profit since then, showing second-run films for around $4 a show.

The Texan Theater represented a nationwide movement, mostly in small towns, where cities and citizens are restoring their once mighty movie houses. It was closed on September 8, 2022.

From the Cleveland TX Scanner News on Facebook it states that “After an 89-year run, the Texan Theater in Cleveland will cease operations as a movie theater on Sept. 8. The historic theater, the last of its kind still open in Liberty County and recognized with a Liberty County Historical Commission Marker on May 15, 2021 has been negatively impacted by the changes in movie-viewing habits in recent years and the arrival of muptiplex theaters in neighboring communities….
