Interesting article. I always wondered how a video projection system can be seen outdoors over some distance.

Has this drive-in always been an XXX drive-in?

I don't really know if it opened as an adult only drive-in. It hasn't been easy finding info on this drive-in. I did find out that the owner is listed as a Ms. Hardy. I'm not even sure if thats her real name or not. Here is an ad that I found for this drive-in:

The owner of this drive-in is listed as Doris Hardy. She also is listed as the owner of Hi-Way Wrecker Service also located in Tyler.

This Drive-in and the Fiesta drive-in near El Paso TX, are the only adult drive-ins left.

I went to this drive-in in 1981 or 82. I had no idea it was only 2 or 3 years old at that time. The projector bulb was so dim....you could barely see the movie. To make matters worse.....since it was located in the woods....the fog would roll in and make the screen even harder to see. Not that anyone was really watching the movie anyway. I went to this drive-in with some college roomates to see what this place was all about. What an adventure!

this opened in the 60s

Ms. Hardy is her real name. The theatre did open as a regular drive in. My mother as a youngster went there. In the late 80's it was turned into an adult drive in. I have only been there once and will never go back. It is definately one for the homosexuals. When you pull into a parking place they immediately surround your vehicle and want to watch whatever is going on in your car. They come around not only in vehicles but on foot. There is an indoor sex shop that also has viewing rooms with couches *didn't go in but i am sure they don't wipe them down each time they are used! I wouldn't recommend going there. Going in the daytime shouldn't be too bad and night lock the doors and don't look at any faces...never can tell who will be there!

I think this may be the marquee for the Apache:

That is the marquee for this Apache Drive-In. I wonder where they advertise the movies that are playing since no movie titles are given on the marquee. Maybe nobody cares whats playing.

"Adult movies" says it all. Patrons probably aren't that interested in the movie, anyway.

I used to go hear one year I was in High School in East Texas. We used to sneak friends in along what I think was the Eastern edge of the drivein.

Tylergal: ~ Girl, that was too funny. I will be certain not to make a trip there...especially at night. Although, back in the late '70s and '80s I think almost all of the drive-ins were homosexual dens, even if they were showing a Disney film. You could be there watching a double-bill of "Caddyshack" and "Rabbit Test", then see a few other things you didn't ask for.
