The Salem Theatre opened on February 16, 1928 with Bebe Daniels in “She’s a Sheik”. It was operated by Salem Theater, Inc. and was equipped with a Wurlitzer theatre organ which was opened by organist Johanna Grosse. In 1953, the Salem Theatre was closed. The theatre reopened as the New Salem Theatre on July 2, 1954, now with a snack bar.
On December 19, 1965 the New Salem Theatre closed for good with Vivian Leigh in “Ship of Fools”. The projection booth was converted into “Juliet’s Balcony” and the auditorium was converted to several eating areas. Today it has been converted in an apartment building for seniors.
