When I spotted the Grande about 15-20 years ago, it was about to open as a video rental store. It had a colorful orange combo marquee and sign along with “Grande Theater” in large painted letters on the front and side of the building.

I think the Grande showed a few English movies dubbed in Spanish during the 70s. I’m pretty sure that’s where I saw “The Shining”. But most of the movies I saw were at the nondescript Cinema I & II on 77/Sunshine Strip – Star Wars, Jaws, all the hits. Wonder what ever happened to it.

The following is from the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce site:

“The Grande opened in 1941, amidst the Golden Age of Hollywood and Mexican cinema. It joined the Rialto, Strand, and Arcadia as the fourth movie house in Harlingen, all of which were owned and operated by Interstate Theatres. The theatre closed in 1989. A mural on the east side of the building depicts the parable of the Good Samaritan. It was painted by Carlos Ruiz of Santa Maria, Texas, in 1999”.

This ad was in the Harlingen Valley Morning Star on 1/31/43, so presumably the Grande opened in January or February 1942:
