Savoy in the 1940s

The Savoy Theater opened 1908. It was remodelled with a yellow & blue tile façade in 1937 by architect William H. Lee, and at that time it was operated by Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corp. According to April 19, 1952 Box Office magazine, the Savoy Theater was to close the following week to make way for a new Hannover shoe store. It was closed on April 24, 1952 with Bette Davis in “Phone Call From a Stranger” & Jane Russell in “The Outlaw”.

This can be made Closed/Demolished—the north side of the 1200 block of Market Street was cleared by the early ‘90s to make way for a Marriott hotel as part of the Convention Center project.

Last day for the Savoy was April 24, 1952, showing “Phone Call From a Stranger” and “The Outlaw.” The Savoy was operating as an all-night house by this time; Stanley Warner moved that policy across the street to the Palace the next day.
