Opened in the late-1960’s, the single-auditorium Queen’s Cinema is the largest on the ‘rock’. It was constructed mainly out of concrete. In 1982 it was given a patriotic red, white & blue décor. The seats and screen curtains were in red and the recessed pillars were blue. It has air conditioning, under-floor heating and concealed lighting, and was the only cinema in Gibraltar to have these facilities. Seating is provided for 668 in the stalls and 193 in the circle. It was initially operated by Film Exhibitors Ltd. who also operated the Prince of Wales Cinema.
In addition to movies, the Queen’s Cinema was used for concerts, meetings, beauty pageants, and various special functions. It was closed in June 2014.
