I’m the new owner of the Players Theatre who brought the building in September of 2006. Didn’t pour millions in as the posting above suggests but we did do some renovations. I am familiar with the cinema history of the venue and I am interested in bring this back into the theatre schedule. If there’s anyone interested is running such a series they should contact me. Correct phone number for theatre is 212-475-1449. You can also contact me through the website: www.theplayerstheatre.com

Here is a photo from 2004.
Built in 1907 and converted into a theatre in the late 1940’s according to the Players Theatre website.
This theater was bought by a new owner who was reportedly pouring millions into it to make a state of the art playhouse/studios complex.
I’ve seen various off-Broadway shows here and never understood why it was so long and narrow. Until I read the above and realized it was a film theater first.
Viva Cinema Treasures!!
A play by David Barth ‘Hard Right’ was being staged at the Players Theatre when I took this photograph in May 2006:

The first c/o that I have found that mentions a theater at this address is dated June 5, 1962. At that time there is a 299 seat theater located here.
Two views of the former Players Cinema as seen in June 2005:

Now called the Playhouse Theatre. When I passed by the other day it was closed (nothing being staged) and the building is up for sale. It seems like it is a multiple use building with the Cafe Wha? restaurant in the basement, a theatre at first floor level and a reheasal space above
The street name should be MacDougal St. The City gives a build date of 1950 for this building. It is currently listed under restaurant.
