The Town Theatre opened in 1947 as an 832-seat movie theatre. Around 1974 the Town Theatre closed. In March of 1998, the Friends of the Old Town Theatre was organized. After almost four years of planning and renovating, the Town Theatre was dedicated on February 22, 2002 as the J. Philip Gibbs Jr. Centre for the Performing Arts. Films are now screened as part of the programming.
