The American Theatre, which stood on 8th Street (now Mississippi Avenue) between Sycamore Street and Victory Avenue, is shown in the 1945 Film Daily Yearbook as being closed with seating for 750.

Any further information on the American would be appreciated.

The American Theatre is also listed as ‘closed’ in the 1941 and 1943 editions of Film Daily Yearbook.

I have records that say it was listed in the 1930-1933 editions of F.D.Y operating as a Negro theatre.

The address that I found for this theater is 1026 8th Street. When I mapped that, the address returned is:
1026 Mississippi Ave
East St Louis, IL 62201

Maybe this street went through a name change.

8th Street is either South or North 8th Street. South 8th Street becomes Mississippi at Valentine Street. So the address of 1026 Mississippi is corrent. The American was always a Negro Theatre. The entire area that it was located in was an all black neighborhood. The theatre has long since been demolished. It was located on the East side of the street between Victory and Sycamore.

It is an empty field right by where the RR tracks go to the old Mc Arthur Bridge.
