The Liberty Theatre was opened in the 1940’s. Classic small town cinema operating 7 days a week (6 days during winter months).
It was closed in November 2013 due to the death of its owner Skip Fletcher. It was operating as a hotel until 2022.

A 2008 view of the Liberty Theater in Seward here and here.
This family-run theater offers the exceptional experience of seeing movies in an environment surviving pretty much intact from the late 1940s. It has more old-time Hollywood atmosphere than any cinema I’ve ever visited, as well as an awesomely nostalgic concession stand. When in Seward, re-arrange your schedule to see whatever is playing at the Liberty. It will more than repay your trouble in any season though, like everything in Alaska, it is especially magical in winter.
Closed November 2013.
Can’t remember if it was the Liberty where I saw Wedding Crashers with my dad in 2005. Think it was a converted army barracks; as down-at-the-heels a theater as I’ve ever been in
Currently an operational hotel.
From Alaska Itinerary: “The Liberty Theater, located at 301 Adams Street, is a historic landmark in downtown Seward. Built in the 1940s, it served as a beloved movie theater with a nostalgic Hollywood atmosphere. The theater closed in November 2013. It operated as part of a hotel until 2022 but is now closed. Despite this, the building remains an important part of Seward’s cultural heritage.”
The building still stands as of November 2024 and can be seen in one of Adam the Woo’s Alaska travel vlogs on youtube.
