Located in downtown Singapore at the corner of Stamford Road and North Bridge Road. The immense Capitol Theatre opened in 1929. It was bought by the Shaw circuit from the Namaze Brothers in 1946 and became the premiere picture palace of the Shaw group until the nearby Lido Cinema was built.
The Capitol Theatre was home to the greatest movies and live events. The theater’s live acts continued, along with movies, until 1998.

This website gives the architects names as Keys & Dowdeswell. It also claims that the Capitol Theater was know as the Kyo-Ei Gekkyo during Japanese occupation in the 1940’s.
Here is another photo of the Capitol.
I’ve just arrived in Singapore and have just noticed that the Capitol has been given a new lick of paint. From my hotel room 38 floors above the theatre it even looks like it has a renovated roof!
Anyone have any news?
I will make some enquiries while I/m here.
It has 100% been done up since the above pictures were submitted.
What’s the address?
Here is a photo circa 1950:

Here’s a picture of the cinema’s hall. I came across it via an open door today while at that area and took a photo of it. Was surprised that it’s still largely intact despite being dis-used for such a long time.

No signs of any activity here on a recent visit, still closed as are associated business premises.
Check out my writeup + photos of the interior of the theatre.
