Apparently it didn’t close in 1978. Look at the picture. Blue Lagoon was released in 1980. Please update.

The Swiss Theatre was at 1030 Main Street. The building is recognizable only from its situation and its size. The front has been remodeled and covered with vertical siding painted grayish blue, and an overhead door has been installed at one end. The set-back brick building to the left of the theater in the vintage photo is still there, as is the conifer growing in the parkway at the right. Otherwise it would be impossible to tell that this building once housed the Swiss Theatre.

This theatre was featured on a recent episode of “American Pickers.” It is being used as a warehouse to store collectibles.

The Swiss Theatre opened in the summer of 1948, according to an item in the October 23 issue of Boxoffice Magazine that year. The 449-seat theater was designed by the Evansville, Indiana, firm of Warweg and Hagel. Other issues of Boxoffice give the name of the original operator of this independent house as Silver Rayley (or Raley- their spelling is inconsistent.)

At various times, Tell City also had theaters called the Royal, the Rialto, and the Ohio.
