Columbia Theater

Built in 1889, the Monte Pio Hall was located on Acushnet Avenue at the bottom of Howland Street (today renamed Wing Street). It also known as Portuguese club and later a Cape Vedean Club). The building also contained a bowling alley and a pool hall. The Monte Pio Hall was screening movies by 1914. It became the Columbia Theatre which had closed by 1926. The building was demolished in the 1940’s to make way for Bay Village, the city’s first housing project.
