Victory Theatre

The Victory Theatre on Water Street opened on July 23, 1943 with Judy Garland in “Lily Mars”. The theatre operated at least into the 1970’s and was demolished in 1989. A parking lot for the Emerald Island Casino is now on the site.

The Victory Theatre wasn’t on Water Street. It was on a small street that was in between Navy and Panama. I am not sure if Army Street or Atomic Street would have extended across Market to give that little short road a name. If memory serves me right, it was on the corner of Panama across from the Fire Department. I can still remember being dropped off by the family station wagon for the saturday cartoons and a show. My mom still has a pearl ring that I found on the floor there, back in 1962. The drug store around the corner was another great place to go. Dad would take us boys over to the Barber Shop on Market Street for our monthly “Crew Cut” with a dab of Butch Wax..
