FALL WITH FLOOR IN PICTURE THEATRE; Many Buried in Cellar of East Side Show When Supports Under Lobby Give Way.

NY Times April 28, 1910

The sudden collapse of the entire concrete and timber flooring of the lobby of the Metropolitan Theatre, a new moving-picture show, at 134 Essex Street, last night threw more than twenty-five men, women, and children into the basement below.

Here is some additional info from the NY Times:

The building in which the theatre was housed was formerly a five story factory, but was recently remodeled into a theatre, under the management of Joseph Friedlander and J. Tenzer. Only the first floor was occupied at the time of the accident, and that had been fitted up into an orchestra and balcony.

Captain Day of the Eldridge Street Station arrested Joseph Friedlander of 1691 St. Johns Place, Brooklyn, part owner and manager of the theatre, on a charge of criminal negligence. Then he called Inspector Patrick Dwyer of the Building Department to investigate the cave in and if possible, fix the blame. Dwyer said he could not then tell what was the cause of the accident.

Did it close after this unfortunate accident?

I don’t know Bway. I haven’t found a follow-up article yet. You would think that there would be numerous deaths after an accident like this, but the story claims that with all of the injuries, “one will probably die”. Its a lengthy article and I don’t want to type the whole thing up because I might get carpal tunnel syndrome. LOL If you want to read it, I’ll email it to you.
