texas25th: enjoyed the pics on the site even though it’s a shame the theatre was destroyed.
We built this basic site to remember the TEXAN. Hope you enjoy the images.

Wow first an explosion, rebuilt and then a fire, thats bad luck.
From 1984 a view of the Texan Theater, a view of the Texan from 2008 and from 2010 of the empty lot left behind after the 2009 fire.
You cannot rely on google mapping. Main St. divides North & South Bell St. When you hit the map in the header it clearly shows the theatre on the South side of Main St. Also if you look at the map it shows in print the Texan on the South Bell side of Main St. So the address is correct. In the book “History of the Texas Motion Picture Theatres” it gives the address at 110 S. Bell. Also the photo of Google mapping is out dated.
Sorry KenMC that is NOT the prefire view. The prefire view was a resurfaced building that the current owner put a lot of time and money into. She did her research, talked to many a resident (including Bobby Thompson), bought books that referenced the old theater, found the colors that were as close to the original colors as possible, contacted the state historical society, and invested about 20-30k into the restoration of that theater.
There are pictures out there on the web of a beautiful theater with bright blue doors, cream and peach walls with maroon trimmed tiles. The picture that is currently posted was probably taken around the time the Shultz/McCullough’s owned it or maybe even before that when the Pettits had it.
The theater does not map out to the address on 110 S. Bell, for reasons unknown. Here is the pre-fire view:

I am from NY, and I hear your cries and that of locals. Willing demolition due to a developer’s greed is bad enough, but it is additionally sad when it happens unexpectedly due to fire. It is truly indeed a sad day. I hope the cause is investigated, and a conclusion is made. When the timing is right, the theater owners should realize the pivotal role the theater played in the community, and in conjunction with elected officials, and community residents, rebuild a historic Art Deco gem; an endangered species countrywide.
Tonight the Hamilton Texan Theater burnt down. The fire started around 9 p.m. and is still burning @ 12:00. This is truly a sad moment in history and in Hamilton, it is now demolished.
This is a 2008 photo of the Texan.
Boxoffice Magazine confirms that there was a second Texan Theatre in Hamilton, after catastrophe befell this one. In the New Construction section of the July 2, 1949, issue is this: “Hamilton, Tex.— Bids to be taken soon for new Texan Theatre, fire replacement by H.H. Stroud. Jack Corgan, Dallas, architect.”
Two photos of the Texan Theater in Hamilton. The first taken in 3/1984 and the second one taken in 3/2008.
Here is a 2004 photo of the Texan Theater in Hamilton. The theater is located at 110 S. Bell Street. To verify that the photo is the Texan Theater in Hamilton, the store to the left of the theater is Treadway Hearing Aid Center, located at 108 S Bell St. That theater building appears larger than a 304 seat theater. The original Texan Theater probably burned down and was replaced with the larger building.
This website lists a Texan Theater in Hamilton and claims it was built in 1928. A little more than halfway down the page.
I’m thinking the same thing. This is a program calendar from 1975 for a Texan Theater in Hamilton. This theater was either rebuilt or replaced.
The City of Hamilton’s website until recently (hence the cached version) had a listing for a Texan Theatre at 110 S. Bell Street. (The city’s website no longer lists the theater as a business so I assume it’s closed). The Texan Theatre must’ve been rebuilt or a new Texan Theatre may have been constructed after the 1949 fire. The 1951 Film Daily Yearbook lists two theaters operating in Hamilton at that time, the Strand, seating 350, and the Texan, seating 500.
Fair enough.
I haven’t been able to find any information about a Texas Theater in Hamilton. Maybe the name was spelled wrong. We could convert this listing to the Texan Theater. If another source for a Texas Theater in Hamilton is found, the Texas Theater could be added again.
Editions of Film Daily Yearbook’s from 1941 and 1943 list two theaters in Hamilton, TX: Texan Theater with 500 seats, Strand Theater with 317 seats. Only the Strand Theater is listed in the 1950 edition of F.D.Y. with a seating capacity of 350.
Maybe it’s the same one. If you see a separate theater, go ahead and add it.
There is also a Texan Theater in Hamilton, Texas. I don’t think its listed here. If you want to add it, go ahead. You can do a Google search for the address.
