On a visit to Albuquerque, the manager of the former Sunshine theatre maintained that the next door building which housed the Rio theatre has been demolished, and the current building on that site, which includes the Sushi King restaurant, is a new build. As can be seen from my photograph, this certainly appears to be the case.

Motion Picture Herald, Oct. 11, 1952: “Albuquerque Exhibitors Inc. … have closed the Yucca, Chief and Rio, three small old theatres all of which have outlived their usefulness.”

November 17th, 1932 grand opening ad as Rio in photo section. It opened as Liberty in 1931.

Oklahoma Hisorical Society Archives presents this 1932 shot of the Rio Theatre. Just OK? It is great the way Spanish Adobe styling flowed gracefully to form Southwestern patterns. I love this one!

The address now is 118 Central Avenue SW. It’s a Sushi King restaurant. There’s no picture of the building on the King’s website, so I don’t know if the theater is being reused.
