My wife mentioned that her grandma had noted that a storm tore the roof off the theater at one point. The storm could account for the mid century facade. I’ll try to dig up more details and report back sometime.
The theatre’s website touts “since 1919”. There is a vintage photo there that might date from 1937.
However, the exterior and sign now, if it’s even the same building, look more 1950s.
On Dec.31 1959 The Lake Theatre was playing “BUT NOT FOR ME” with “THE JAYHAWKERS” coming next!
