An exterior photo of the Dixie Theatre from circa 1943 can be seen here.
Were there two Dixie Theaters on Broad Street?
South side of Broad St., between Brooksville and Magnolia Aves.
Site of Victory Theater
In 1926, Allan Hawkins built a $50,000 theater here to seat 1,000. It was renovated to accommodate talking movies, the first in Brooksville being “Dames Ahoy”. It closed in 1930 or 1931 because of lack of customers, and reopened in 1931 as the Dixie Theater and new acoustics. It closed shortly thereafter.

There’s another picture on this blog.
The address is 120 N. Broad Street. This is the second Dixie, replacing an earlier one that burned down. The building at this address is the old theater building, which was remodeled extensively in the 70s.
Some interior pictures from 1981 can be seen in an issue of the St. Pete Times here.
My father told me stories of both watching films at the Victory Theatre as well as working there as a boy. He changed piano rolls in the days of silent films (a fast-paced job), posted “bills” for the shows and also collected tickets from balcony patrons (he got to watch the movies). Later he sold tickets, a job he didn’t care for because he didn’t get to see the films. His family operated a bakery across the street from the show house that was called City Bakery. My Dad died in Wisconsin in 1996 at the age of 91.
