Opened by General Cinema on September 25, 1987 as The Plaza 8, the theater is located at the Plaza at Chapel Hill. AMC took over the theater when they bought General Cinema in 2002. On February 1, 2008, Cleveland Cinemas took over management of the theater, renaming it Plaza Cinemas at Chapel Hill.
The Plaza Cinemas at Chapel Hill was closed on January 4, 2013. The building was demolished in February 2013, and a Dicks Sporting Goods store was built on the site.

The Plaza Cinemas closed January 4, 2013 due to the landlord having new use for the land. The building will be torn down and replaced by a new Dick Sporting Goods in the Fall of 2013.
The Plaza Cinemas closed at the expiry of a 25-year leasing agreement with “Critique du Soleil: Worlds Away,” “Alex Cross,” The Perks of Being a Wallflower,“ “Sinister,” “Skyfall,” “Playing for Keeps,” “Flight,” and “Rise of the Guardians.” The building was demolished in February of 2013.
This cinema was allegedly spared when General Cinema filed for bankruptcy in October 2000. An article from The Daily Pennsylvanian published November 16, 2000 states General Cinema shut down 53 of the 130 theaters they operated in September of the same year.
