Here is a postcard showing the Comet, circa 1930-1945:

Both the Comet Theater and the drugstore in the postcard picture were owned by Allison Louis Overby.
This November 1948 Time story did not identify the theater, but presumably it was the Comet:
When a movie theater in Angier, N.C. (pop. 1,028) scheduled a sex picture called Mom and Dad (“Bold! Shocking! The Secrets of Sensible Sex”), it was overrun by an unmanageable crowd. Firemen had to wet down the crowd with a hose before the picture could be shown to an all-male audience.
You shouldn’t speculate because the information can mislead people. In 1945 the Comet Theater is listed as closed with 250 seats. The other theater at that time was the Piquant Theater. That might be the theater mentioned in the Time story.
Site of the Theatre is now a parking lot with an address of 20 N. Broad St. E. at E. Depot St., theatre opened as the Angier.
A little more research and it would be found that the protest was at a theatre named the Piquant, also there were several small fires set at the rear of the Piquant Thteatre.
