The Cinema Teatro Sistina was contructed between 1942 and 1949 and designed by noted architect Marcello Piacentini. It opened in 1949 with the film “Le Mura di Malapaga”. Located close to the Piazza Barberini which contains the (now 5-screen) Cinema Barberini. On 28th June 1955 it became a 3-strip Cinerama theatre named Cinema Palazzo Sistina, opening with “This Is Cinerama”. It cosed as a Cinerama theatre on 31st May 1959 and reverted back to regular 35mm screenings.

Today it is in use as a live theatre, known as the Teatro Il Sistina, occasionally staging English-language (American and off-Broadway) productions of musical revues. Seating is provided for 832 in the orchestra, 349 in the balcony and 16 in two box slips

As the Teatro Palazzo Sistina, this theatre ran 3-strip Cinerama film from June 28, 1955 to May 31, 1959.
