Located in the Southwest Waterside Mall Shopping Center, the Southwest Cinema had a very short life, opening on July 6, 1973 with “The Heartbreak Kid” & “W,C. Fields at his Best”. There were 200 seats in each auditorium and the screens were named South Cinema and West Cinema. It was operated by Chevy Chase Associates.

One of the auditoriums began to screen gay films, and private viewing booths were installed behind the screen, whilst the other screen played classic movies. The Southwest Cinema closed at the end of 1974/beginning of 1975 and was converted into storage space for the Enviromental Protection Agency.

The site where the cinema once stood has been completely demolished.
